MAKE: easy yarn pom poms & a simple infant bunny photo idea.
Holidays take on new meaning for us these days now that we have a little one in the house. I love that feeling of joy I get when we include her in our celebrations… even during the planning before a holiday happens!
I was in Target the other day and picked out our daughter’s Easter dress and basket. I couldn’t help but grab a pair of bunny ears from the dollar bin, too!
I decided to snap a few photos of Little C in her dress with her Easter basket on a white rug. While I had the camera out, I thought it would be fun to take a few pictures of her in the bunny ears, too. A pink onesie to match was perfect… but my little bunny needed a tail!
So, I grabbed some white yarn and made a quick tail.
How to make a yarn pom pom
First, I cut a long rectangular length of cardboard. The shorter side would be approximately half the width of my future pompom. (You can use a cardboard circle method, too, but I find this approach is much easier.)
I wrapped the cardboard with copious amounts of yarn.
Then, using a long string of yarn (doubled-up since this yarn was thin), I threaded the string between the loops of yarn and cardboard. I pulled the cardboard out and tied the yarn tightly. As I did this, I made a large knot of yarn that I could use later to fasten it.
Taking my scissors, I cut the tied loops of yarn to create something that was starting to look like a pom pom!
I trimmed the pom pom and gave it a bit of a ‘haircut’ to get it to the shape and fullness I desired.
To attach the pom pom to my little bunny I used a large safety pin and pinned the ‘knot’ in the pom pom to the fabric of Little C’s onesie.
Since the strings could be pulled out of the pompom, I did not let Little C hold the pom pom. I strictly used it just for the costume/photo. This was a simple way to create a cute Easter photo for my baby and I bet it would make an easy Halloween costume, too.
Someday Little C probably won’t let me photograph her in bunny ears. I love capturing some of these moments… because someday is probably going to come too fast!
