crafts paint paper

Magnetic memo boards: made from the dollar store!

Madigan made…    a dollar store burner cover magnet board.

I love cheap and simple projects!

I first saw this idea at Brassy Apple (via Tatertots & Jello) and I’ve seen many other variations across blogland. Once I saw this project, I knew I wanted to make my own version.

I found that the steps to making these magnetic memo boards were quite simple.

Supplies needed:

– Pack of 2 metal burner covers (or a single pizza pie plate) from the dollar store
– Spray paint
– Sandpaper or file
– Spray sealant
– Mod Podge
– Fun paper
– Ribbon
1. Drill or punch two small holes on one edge of the burner cover or pie plate. I spaced my holes several inches apart. Sand down any sharp metal edges around the hole with sandpaper.
2. Spray paint the edges of the cover or plate with a fun or coordinating color. (You are going to cover the center over with paper. No worries if the paint doesn’t cover that area.)

3. Cut a circle of paper that will fit in the area you need to cover. The burner covers were easy to trace around and cut out by hand. A large circle cut from a 12×12 sheet of card stock covered the the pizza pie plate.

4. Mod Podge the paper circle onto the metal. Tip: spread the glue with a foam brush on the metal and lay the paper circle on top. Smooth out any bubbles. Wait until that glue dries. Then brush more Mod Podge on top of the paper to seal it. This should help minimize any bubbling.

5. Embellish as needed. Use stickers, fun die-cut shapes or a smaller circle of paper. Mod Podge those on top of the first layer of paper.

6. After the Mod Podge dries, seal the whole thing with a clear acrylic spray.

7. Knot and tie a ribbon through the pre-drilled holes to hang the board.

8. Make coordinating magnets with matching paper, glass gems and magnets. For detailed instructions on how to make the magnets, read this post.

I made this one and several other magnetic memo boards for the craft fair I went to back in November.

Here are two others I made for the fair:

I thought that these would be perfect in an office, kitchen, child’s room or dorm room. Fun and functional!

You don’t even have to use it as a magnet board. The decorated circle could be cute just as wall art. (A series of them repeated on a wall could look really cool.)
