DIY Kids Animal Dress-up Costumes

MAKE: simple animal dress-up costumes for kids. DIY toddler mouse costume (interchangeable costume to other animals, too)

My little gal is starting to really take an interest in playing pretend. I have to say, it is fun to watch!

So, with Halloween right around the corner, I decided to make her a costume that could pull double-duty for pretend play later on.

She loves animals, so that theme seemed like a natural fit for the costume. But, I figured if I kept the base of the costume neutral, I could create a couple of different animals out of one outfit. So, with a quick headband or tail change, my daughter can become a sweet mouse, a funny bunny or a cute cat.

Easy DIY toddler dress-up costume (interchangeable costume to 3 animals)

I broke down how I made these costumes on my YouTube channel this week. Learn how easy it is to make these charming, quick and easy costumes for kids.

This craft is a very, very simple sewing project… and I used fleece, which is very forgiving. I couldn’t resist adding a little vintage fabric for a sweet and  feminine touch. Oh, and fabric Mod Podge made the appliqués easy!

Toddler Bunny DIY Costume Idea

Full disclosure: This costume is not very fancy and my sewing skills are rudimentary and basic. If I can make these costumes, I know you can!

These interchangeable animal costumes (a bunny, a cat and a mouse) are so sweet and so simple to create. They’d be perfect for an easy DIY Halloween costume or for your kid’s pretend play.

Watch below and get the FREE template and full supply list at the bottom of the post:

If you did not want to create your own animal ear shapes, I did save my cuts and put the templates into a free printable that you can use. Just print off the sheet and cut out your desired shapes to trace onto fabric. It is so easy to make your favorite animal ears!  Click HERE to download the print OR the photo below.

Free printable templates to create three different animal ear headbands. Cute idea for a Halloween costume or dress-up.

Shannon, When my kids were little I had a bunch of dress up stuff I collected at rummage sales (garage sales and goodwill) like vintage gloves and dresses. I also went to the store after Halloween and picked up 1/2 price items. I even got a chef's hat and jacket from someone. My kids (1 boy, 2 girls) all had so much fun playing dress up. Another thing is to look for adult clearance shoes in small sizes. I was always adding to the dress-up boxes. I actually bought girl stuff before I even had my first girl. We had tea parties (with real tea) and dressed up too.
