MAKE: a simple and modern DIY table placemat.
Confession time.
I love my kitchen table.
I don’t love covering it up with a clunky table cloth. But I also don’t love seeing spills on my table that I have to clean up quickly to avoid damage. This is tough with a toddler learning to sit at the table!
I’ve contemplated getting a piece of glass cut for the tabletop but I am worried about the issues that option could pose (If you don’t pick up the glass right after a spill, water can seep under the edges. Glass is heavy and dangerous to move when that happens.)
So, I recently came up with the perfect solution! Make a **GIANT** DIY table placemat out of vinyl fabric!
Yes, it is essentially a placemat that covers your table from edge-to-edge. It is a simple and modern solution to cover your table and still allows the lines and curves of your table to shine…. and it is really easy to make your own with a pretty piece of vinyl!

Supplies to make a GIANT DIY Placemat:
- Scissors
- Dry erase marker
- Vinyl fabric of your choice* (some links below are affiliates)
*As I mentioned in the video, I found my patterned, semi-clear vinyl fabric at Walmart in the fabrics department. I can’t seem to locate that fabric on their website. If your store does not have that pattern, you could just try a plain, clear vinyl that you can get at any fabric store. Or, may want to consider some of these other options I found below. Some fabrics are clear or transparent while some are opaque.
