MAKE: a DIY sun hat with a fun saying.
As a crafter and DIYer, I walk through stores and frequently find myself saying, “I can make that.”
Do you?
Well, with the arrival of spring and warmer weather, I’ve spotted loads of cute floppy beach hats decorated with fun sayings or words on the brim. I saw a lot of hats, but none of the phrases really suited me.
When I can’t find something that works, you know I’m going to try and make it myself! And given the fact that I’m a big fan of wearing sunscreen daily… I wanted to incorporate that aspect into my hat.
Hence, my “SPF & CHILL” hat was born! (Or, “spiff and chill?” as my husband thought it said… hopefully you guys get the reference!) This DIY sun hat was the perfect accessory to take on a trip this spring!
Our family just got back from a wonderful beach vacation off of the Florida gulf coast. We spent five nights on a little, shell covered island called Sanibel.
As you guys can guess, I take sun safety pretty seriously. For the trip, I packed this hat, other hats, UPF rash guards and loads of sunscreen. (Looking for a good sunscreen? Check out my 7 tips for buying sunscreen here.) While in Florida, we had great weather, lots of fun searching for shells and enjoyed days by the pool and beach.

There are only a few steps and supplies needed to make this personalized summer hat. Please note that this post contains affiliate links. (I may earn commissions for purchases made through links in this post, at no added cost to you. Please refer to my disclosure statement for details.)
Supplies needed for a DIY Sun Hat:
- Wide brimmed straw hat (Tip: look for a tighter weave than the one I found. It will provide better sun protection and prevent paint from dripping through while drying.)
- 3D fabric paint
- Chalk
- Wax or parchment paper
Steps to make a summer hat with a saying on it:
- Sketch out your saying with chalk onto the hat brim.
- Place paper under hat to catch any drips.
- Trace over the chalk lines with the puffy paint.
- Allow paint to dry and clean up the chalk lines with a little water.
- Slap on some sunscreen and your cute, new hat and head to the beach!
